Literacy Legislation in Georgia
In addition to the imperative to follow the science and research on best instructional practices, several recently passed laws related to literacy instruction are driving change in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools. These laws are requiring all districts and teacher preparation programs in Georgia to align instruction and teacher training to the Science of Reading and structured literacy practices. Additionally, they mandate procedures for the identification of students who are significantly at risk of not attaining grade-level reading proficiency or characteristics of dyslexia and for intervention when those students are identified.
